Grameenphone, the first GSM mobile operator in Bangladesh has been the largest telecommunications service provider in the country. Owned by Telenor (55.8% shares), the company is a joint venture between Grameen Telecom Corporation and Telenor and now has about 32 million subscribers.

They have now introduced a co-branded version of the Opera Mini Browser for their subscribers. The Telenor Group and Opera Software had a global agreement last year to come together and encourage the growth of mobile internet services across its business units on a global level. This agreement has led to the expansion and growth of mobile internet services in Bangladesh as well. Opera has joined hands with Grameenphone and provided them with a browser customised for the local market.

“Access to the Web should not be limited to the privileged few. For a majority of mobile telephony users in emerging markets, a mobile handset may turn out to be the primary way of accessing the Internet. The technology behind the Opera Mini browser is best suited for such markets, where EDGE/GPRS are widely used. We have worked hard to ensure that Opera Mini is able to run on a wide range of mobile devices, providing users with a rich browsing experience. Our excitement to launch a customized version of the Opera Mini browser today is further amplified by the fact that we have the support of Grameenphone,” said Mr. Lars Boilesen, Chief Executive Officer, Opera Software.

The customised Opera Mini Browser can be downloaded by texting “Opera” and sending it to 5000. Grameenphone users will gain free internet access for one week after downloading the Opera Browser.
