Ever wanted to use the internet while travelling in train in India, but failed due to the bad connectivity by your mobile operator? All of this is in the past now as the Indian Railways will finally be offering Internet services to its passengers, on-the-go straight into the coaches.

Internet-on-indian-railways

Thanks to the grant of permission from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Indian Railways will now be able to make use of the KU band frequency that ISRO makes use of and link its satellite to provide Internet.

It was about 2 years back when the Indian Railway had announced that such a service will be available to its passengers on-board but the project never took-off, thanks to the delay in the grant of permission by the ISRO. But now the project is live and the service will be under pilot testing on-board the Howrah Rajdhani Express.

Any user who would like to use the internet service while travelling will have to dial a number, which can be taken from the TT of the train and then the user will be provided with a password which when entered can give passengers access to the world of Internet in their train coach.

Initially while the testing is on, the service is said to be free for the passengers to try out and a Mumbai based company has been roped in to provide all the custom-made equipments and providing the service. The estimated cost of implementation of the project is Rs.6.30 crore.

Indeed a great move by the Indian Railways. Will you use the service while travelling?
