Earlier this month, we came across some screenshots hinting at WhatsApp working on possible desktop clients for Windows and Mac OS. Those screenshots turn out to be true now. WhatsApp has officially announced desktop app for Windows and Mac OS.
“Today we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work. Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.” wrote WhatsApp in a blog post.
This desktop app can be installed on computers running on Windows 8+ or Mac OS 10.9+. Similar to WhatsApp Web, the messages on your smartphone will be synced and displayed on the desktop app which means you will have to keep your smartphone connected to the Internet all time as WhatsApp stores the messages locally.
Using any of these desktop apps is similar to using WhatsApp Web. Just download the desktop app, open it and scan the QR code using WhatsApp on your smartphone. This is essentially similar to WhatsApp Web, except that you wont be using a web browser to send messages from your computer. Instead, you can now make use of the desktop app to do so.
