The Co-CEO of Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie has today unveiled the BlackBerry Tag service. This service is a new way for BlackBerry smartphone users to connect with one another and share multimedia content.

The BlackBerry Tag service will be incorporated in the next BlackBerry 7 OS update and will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by simply tapping their BlackBerry smartphones together. BlackBerry Tag will also enable friends to add one another as contacts on BBM. Yes, it will use NFC technology for the data communication which RIM has already launched in the Bold 9900/9930 and the Curve 9350/9360/9370 smartphones. There are also plans to open the APIs of the BlackBerry Tag service on the BlackBerry platform, allowing software developers to take advantage of “tap to share” functionality from within their own applications.
