Last year Vivo announced its selfie phone Vivo V5 in India with 20 MP front camera. Now the company has launched its Plus variant with a mindblowing dual 20 MP camera on the front with Moonlight LED flash. It seems like Vivo has mastered the selfie-centric division but comes at a price of ₹27,980. Have a look at the selfie phone Vivo V5 Plus hands-on and first impressions.

It is clear that Vivo is targeting people who are obsessed with selfies. The company is already boasting its dual camera feature since it’s the USP of the smartphone. Surprisingly, the phone comes with two front cameras. Shocking, isn’t it? While smartphones like LG G5, HUAWEI P9, Honor 8, Honor 6X and Coolpad Cool 1 are concentrating on the rear dual cameras, Vivo smartly plays the game by incorporating two cameras on the front rather than the backside.

The features of Vivo V5 Plus are pretty much different from the Vivo V5 if you are considering a Plus variant has a larger size display. V5 Plus uses the same 5.5-inch size but rather a Full HD IPS display. The screen is covered by a 2.5D curved glass. The V5 Plus appears to be an extended version of Vivo V5 but more like a flagship device.

The outer appearance is attractive. V5 Plus is noticeably light in weight, just 158.6 grams. In terms of build quality, the phone appears to be premium-grade with curved edges providing a good grip. The matte finish back is full metal with antenna strips. The back also holds a nice chrome-finished VIVO branding.

Moving to the spec-sheet, it offers a 2.0 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 CPU coupled with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage which cannot be extended further. It is based on a newer FunTouch OS 3.0 software utilizing Google Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. There’s a 3,055 mAh battery inside a slim 7.3 mm unibody.

The home button carries an ultra-fast fingerprint scanner. The home key is now clickable which was previously finger touched on Vivo V5. Good thing it has backlit navigation keys that provide a good feedback in dark areas.

Coming to the cameras, it has a 16 MP f/2.0 rear camera with single LED flash. The camera further supports PDAF and 4K video recording that makes a good stand among the high-end camera smartphones like OnePlus 3. The front camera is a dual 20 MP + 8 MP camera with Moonlight LED Flash.

It carries dual SIM 4G network with VoLTE support. I was hoping for a USB Type-C, however, V5 Plus uses the same Micro USB port like the others. The bottom area contains a loudspeaker, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a microphone. The top area holds nothing. You can insert 2 nano SIM cards on the left side while the right has the power and volume controls.

Two Selfie Cameras? Because One Is Not Enough

Interestingly, the front has dual selfie cameras (20 MP + 8 MP) with Moonlight LED Flash. I think you got to hold on to this front LED flash, many flagship smartphones with a high price, say iPhone 7, lack a front LED flash which compromises on low-light selfies. Both V5 and V5 Plus are been considered as a perfect selfie phone.

Since there are two cameras on the front, the blur effect or bokeh is what we like the most in the V5 Plus. The bokeh effect blurs the background of your selfie photo making it look like it’s taken from a professional DSLR camera. The Moonlight flash comes into action when there are less ambient lights.

Vivo V5 Plus Camera Samples – Selfies

At least on paper, the dual selfie camera should be as good as no other smartphone in the competition. We captured a few selfies to show you how does the dual selfie camera perform. The results are extremely satisfying for selfie lovers, and with its Moonlight LED flash, low-light selfies appear exceptionally great. Vivo V5 Plus is the best smartphone as of now for taking great selfies.
