Roblox has announced a major overhaul of its safety framework with the introduction of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, creating a new age-based experience designed specifically for users under 16 years of age. The new system automatically applies safety settings, content access restrictions, communication controls, and parental supervision tools based on a user’s verified age.
According to Roblox, the updated framework combines age verification, content ratings, moderation systems, parental controls, and communication safeguards into a unified safety model. The company says users aged 16 and above will continue using Roblox without any significant changes, while younger users will receive age-appropriate protections and experiences.
New Age-Based Roblox Account System
Under the new framework, Roblox users are automatically placed into different account categories depending on their age.
Roblox Kids Accounts (Ages 5-8)
Roblox Kids accounts receive the platform’s strictest safety protections and are designed for younger children.
Key features include:
- Access limited to Minimal and Mild content ratings
- Chat disabled by default
- Curated and heavily moderated game catalog
- Enhanced content filtering and safety protections
- Restricted social interaction features
Roblox Select Accounts (Ages 9-15)
Users aged between 9 and 15 are automatically assigned Roblox Select accounts.
Features include:
- Access to experiences rated up to Moderate
- Age and region-specific chat settings
- Additional safety protections for users under 16
- Exclusion of experiences involving sensitive themes
- Restrictions on social hangout environments
- Limited access to free-form drawing and user-generated interaction features
Roblox says users will automatically transition between account types as they grow:
- Kids Account → Select Account at age 9
- Select Account → Standard Roblox Account at age 16
Enhanced Moderation and Content Review
To ensure younger users only access age-appropriate experiences, Roblox is strengthening its content review systems.
The company has introduced:
- Developer verification requirements
- Real-time experience evaluation
- Enhanced moderation procedures
- Stricter review standards for younger user catalogs
Only approved and age-appropriate experiences will be visible to Kids and Select account holders.
Expanded Parental Controls
Roblox is also expanding its parental supervision tools, providing families with greater visibility and control over how children use the platform.
New parental features include:
- Gameplay activity monitoring
- Friend list visibility
- Content rating management
- Communication controls
- Screen time scheduling
- Spending and purchase restrictions
- Granular game blocking options
- Direct chat management
- Parent approval system for specific experiences
Certain parental controls will remain active until a child reaches 16 years of age.
Stronger Communication Safeguards
Roblox is introducing additional restrictions around communication and online interactions for younger users.
New safeguards include:
- Facial age verification required for chat access
- Unverified users cannot access standard chat features
- Links, images, and videos remain blocked in chat
- Users under 16 cannot share or view links on profiles, game pages, Community pages, or Creator Hub
- Expanded restrictions on social media links across the platform
The company says these measures are designed to reduce risks associated with scams, inappropriate contact, and external platform redirection.
Transition to Global Age Ratings
Roblox also confirmed plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework later this year. The move will introduce standardized content ratings across global markets, helping parents better understand the suitability of experiences available on the platform.
Speaking on the launch, Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said, “Children’s needs change significantly as they grow, and online experiences should evolve alongside them. With Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we’re creating age-based protections designed to support younger users at different stages, while giving parents tools to personalize the experience for their family.”
Availability
Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts are rolling out globally, including India. Feature availability may vary by region, and parents will be able to request age corrections if account information is inaccurate.
