WhatsApp has reportedly started rolling out full username support to a limited number of Android and iOS users, allowing people to connect with new contacts without directly sharing their phone numbers.

The rollout follows the earlier username reservation phase and is reportedly reaching users across both stable and beta versions of WhatsApp. However, usernames do not replace phone numbers, which remain necessary for creating and accessing a WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp Starts Activating Usernames

According to WABetaInfo, users who receive access will see a banner in the Chats tab confirming that their username is ready to use. The feature is being introduced gradually, meaning some previously reserved usernames may not become active until later this year.

WhatsApp previously allowed users to reserve their preferred usernames ahead of the wider rollout. Users who connected WhatsApp to Accounts Centre could reserve the same username used on Facebook and Instagram, while others could create a separate username specifically for WhatsApp.

Once activated, usernames can be managed from the profile section within WhatsApp Settings. Users can change or completely remove their username at any time.

If a username is removed, WhatsApp will reportedly revert to displaying the user’s phone number in existing conversations.

Connect Without Sharing Your Phone Number

The primary benefit of usernames is the ability to connect with people and businesses without immediately revealing a phone number.

People who do not already know a user’s phone number will see their username instead. However, existing contacts who already have access to the phone number will continue to see it in their conversations.

Phone numbers will also remain a fundamental part of WhatsApp accounts and will still be required for account registration and access.

Contacts Are Informed About Username Changes

When a user creates or changes their username, existing contacts will be informed through a system message inside the conversation rather than a separate push notification.

In group chats, username changes will also reportedly appear under the Member changes section within the group information page.

Username Key Could Add Another Layer of Privacy

WhatsApp is also reportedly developing a username key designed to provide additional control over who can initiate conversations.

When enabled, a person attempting to contact someone for the first time would need to know both the exact username and its associated key.

The key would not be required in certain situations, including when users have previously exchanged messages, share a common group, already have each other’s phone numbers, connect through a QR code, or when the account holder initiates the conversation.

Exact Username Search Supported

Eligible users can reportedly search for other accounts by entering an exact username into WhatsApp’s contact search field.

WhatsApp does not offer a public username directory, and partial username searches are reportedly not supported. This approach makes it more difficult to randomly discover accounts while still allowing users to connect when they know the exact username.

Availability

WhatsApp usernames are reportedly rolling out gradually to a limited number of users on Android and iOS, including users running stable and beta versions of the app.

The rollout is expected to expand in phases over the coming weeks and months, although some reserved usernames may not become active until later in 2026.
