Google forms Open Automotive Alliance with car makers for Android based systems

While there were reports about Google unveiling Android based in-car system at CES 2014, the giant has announced the alliance it has formed with lead car manufacturers and not just Audi.

Google has officially announced the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) in association with Audi, GM, Honda, and Hyundai besides NVidia, which earlier today unveiled the 192 core processor which is expected to be used in cars. The alliance would create a unified platform allowing for effortless integration of Android in the car, besides developing the tools to allow developers to easily build Android apps for the connected car.

The alliance also has plans to pull more car manufacturers in to associating with them and has even initiated talks with National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the necessary permissions. The alliance anticipates the first cars with the Android system to be unveiled by the end of 2014.

Speaking about the Open Automotive Alliance Sundar Pichai, SVP of Android at Google said, “Millions of people are already familiar with Android and use it every day. The expansion of the Android platform into automotive will allow our industry partners to more easily integrate mobile technology into cars and offer drivers a familiar, seamless experience so they can focus on the road.”
