The Maemo and MeeGo projects have been a failure and now the Linux Foundation is said to be planning for a new Linux based software platform. Named Tizen, it will be hosted by the Linux Foundation and a group lead by Intel and Samsung will lead the development of Tizen. There will be other companies joining the project including the LiMo Foundation, Panasonic Mobile, NEC Casio, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, SK Telecom, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

The new platform will focus on HTML5 apps and will be extended to multiple device categories including tablets, handsets, smart TVs and in-vehicle entertainment and should be hitting in mid-2012.

So is this MeeGo’s last stand?
