Airtel has announced the successful completion of the first phase of a strategic connectivity initiative undertaken in partnership with the 4 Corps of the Indian Army, headquartered in Tezpur. The project aims to expand mobile network coverage across some of the most remote, mountainous, and difficult-to-access regions of Arunachal Pradesh.
With the completion of the initial rollout, Airtel has established mobile connectivity across several high-altitude and border regions where telecommunications infrastructure has traditionally been limited due to challenging terrain and logistical constraints. The deployment is expected to benefit both Indian Army personnel stationed in these areas as well as local communities residing in remote border villages.

Airtel Expands Connectivity in Challenging Terrain
As part of the first phase, Airtel deployed network infrastructure across 30 Army stations located in mountainous regions of Arunachal Pradesh. The project required extensive coordination between Airtel and the Indian Army due to the absence of conventional transportation routes and the difficult operating conditions prevalent across many deployment sites.
To facilitate the rollout, the Indian Army provided critical logistical support, including:
- Transportation of Airtel engineers and technical teams to remote locations
- Movement of specialized telecommunications equipment into mountainous areas
- Assistance with fiber-optic cable deployment
- Support for power infrastructure installation and commissioning
The collaboration enabled network deployment in locations that have historically remained underserved because of geographical barriers and limited accessibility.
Benefits for Soldiers and Local Communities
The newly established infrastructure is designed to provide reliable mobile voice and data services across these remote regions. Improved connectivity is expected to support communication requirements for Army personnel while also helping local residents gain access to digital services, online education, communication platforms, and emergency connectivity.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve telecommunications access in border and rural regions while supporting socio-economic development and digital inclusion.
Phase 2 Expansion Planned
Following the successful completion of the first phase, Airtel and the Indian Army have agreed to move forward with Phase 2 of the project.
Under the next stage of deployment, Airtel plans to extend mobile network infrastructure to 15 additional locations across Arunachal Pradesh, further expanding coverage in some of the state’s most isolated and strategically important areas.
The continued collaboration aims to reduce connectivity gaps and improve telecommunications access across remote border regions where reliable mobile services remain limited.
