Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched its satellite phone service in India, offering connectivity in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. Marketed under the theme “Communication Beyond Boundaries,” the service is designed for remote locations, disaster-hit regions, maritime operations, defense personnel, and emergency response teams that require reliable communication beyond terrestrial mobile infrastructure.

Connectivity Beyond Mobile Networks
Unlike conventional smartphones that rely on cellular towers, the BSNL satellite phone connects through satellite communication networks, enabling voice communication even in areas without mobile coverage.
The service is powered through partnerships with global satellite communication providers, including Inmarsat, and is aimed at users operating in remote and challenging environments.
Rugged Design with Emergency Features
The satellite handset is built for field operations and harsh environmental conditions.
According to BSNL, the device features:
- Rugged construction designed for outdoor use
- Long-lasting battery for extended operation
- Clear voice communication
- Dedicated SOS emergency button for distress situations
The hardware is designed to withstand dust, water exposure, and physical impacts commonly encountered in remote deployments.
Built for Critical Applications
BSNL says the satellite phone service is intended for sectors where uninterrupted communication is essential.
Key use cases include:
- Defense and border operations
- Disaster response and emergency management
- Maritime and offshore industries
- Mining and remote industrial operations
- Forest research and exploration
- Pilgrimages and adventure travel in remote regions
Since satellite phones operate independently of terrestrial telecom infrastructure, they can continue providing communication during natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and cyclones when conventional networks may become unavailable.

The BSNL satellite phone is priced at ₹1,34,166, inclusive of applicable taxes.
BSNL has also established dedicated support channels for customers seeking procurement details and service-related information. The company noted that while the service is primarily intended for institutional, industrial, and emergency use cases, it provides an important communication solution for areas beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks.
