Facebook has announced a new free verification system designed to help users identify genuine people as AI-generated profiles and impersonation attempts become increasingly common across social media. The feature introduces a Facebook Verified badge that is earned through identity verification rather than a paid subscription.
According to Meta, the new verification process uses a short video selfie to confirm that the person behind a Facebook profile matches their existing profile photos. Once verified, a checkmark badge will appear on the user’s profile and in several areas across Facebook to help others know they are interacting with a real person.

Free Verification Aims To Combat AI Impersonation
Meta says the new system is intended to make Facebook safer as artificial intelligence makes it easier to generate realistic profile pictures, fake identities, and convincing messages.
Unlike the company’s paid Meta Verified subscription, this new verification method is free for eligible users. To receive the badge, users must record a brief video selfie, which Facebook compares with their existing profile photos to confirm they belong to the same person.
According to the company, the verification process typically takes only a few minutes.
Where The Facebook Verified Badge Will Appear
Once verification is complete, the badge will be displayed across multiple Facebook experiences to help users identify authentic accounts.
Meta says the verification mark will appear in:
- Facebook Profile
- Facebook Dating
- Facebook Marketplace
- Facebook Groups
- Profile to Start
The wider rollout is intended to make it easier for users to distinguish genuine people from fake or AI-generated accounts across the platform.
Who Can Get Verified?
The new verification feature is available to eligible Facebook users aged 18 years and above.
In addition to completing the video selfie verification, accounts must also meet Meta’s trust and safety requirements before receiving the badge.
The company has not detailed every eligibility requirement but says only accounts that satisfy its verification standards will be approved.
As AI-generated content continues to become more sophisticated, Meta believes the new verification system will give users greater confidence that the person behind a profile is genuine while making it more difficult for impersonation accounts to appear legitimate.
Regarding the new feature, Meta says, “The Facebook Verified badge means a profile belongs to a real person – someone who completed selfie verification and meets our trust and safety standards. It’s a quick, visible signal, before you respond to a listing, accept a date, or join a conversation, that there’s a real person on the other end.”
Rolling out gradually
Meta says the free Facebook Verified badge is being introduced in phases, beginning with selected markets before expanding to additional countries worldwide.
The company has not yet confirmed a timeline for a wider global rollout, including availability in India.
