Add MobiGyaan as a preferred source on GoogleAt The Android Show, Google announced a major evolution for Android, repositioning the platform as an “Intelligence System” powered by Gemini AI. According to the company, Android is moving beyond a traditional operating system by deeply integrating AI, hardware, software, and cross-device experiences into a unified intelligent ecosystem.

The announcement introduces Gemini Intelligence, a new AI-powered framework focused on app automation, adaptive experiences, smarter widgets, and support for additional device categories, including XR headsets, smart glasses, foldables, cars, watches, and laptops.

Gemini Intelligence Expands App Automation
A major highlight of the update is Gemini Intelligence, which allows Gemini to automate multi-step tasks across Android apps while maintaining transparency and user control.
Google demonstrated examples, including:
- Ordering coffee through café apps
- Building grocery carts using items from notes apps
- Automating app workflows using natural language
According to Google, the feature helps developers drive “high-intent traffic” to their apps without requiring significant engineering work.
Gemini app automation initially launched with selected ride-sharing and food delivery partners and is now expanding to:
- Foldables
- Smartwatches
- Cars
- XR glasses
- Additional Android device categories
Android AppFunctions API Announced
Google also introduced Android AppFunctions, a new framework allowing developers to expose app services, actions, and data directly to Android and Gemini.
With AppFunctions:
- Gemini can discover app capabilities using natural language
- AI agents can execute app actions directly
- Developers gain more control over AI integrations
Google says the APIs are already being tested in private preview with apps such as KakaoTalk, enabling Gemini-powered tasks like:
- Sending messages
- Starting voice calls
- Performing contextual actions
According to the company, AppFunctions already supports local execution across 25 apps from different Android device manufacturers.
Developers can currently:
- Test APIs locally
- Join the AppFunctions Early Access Program
- Choose between no-code automation or deeper integrations
Widgets Expanding Across Android Devices
Google announced expanded widget support across more Android form factors, starting with Android Auto-compatible vehicles. The company says the update opens new opportunities for developers across more than 250 million Android Auto-supported cars.
Google is also introducing new widget capabilities through:
- Jetpack Glance
- RemoteCompose framework
New widget features include:
- Snapscroll support
- Expressive buttons
- Particle effects
- Adaptive layouts
Google says these experiences will work automatically on Android 16 while maintaining compatibility with older Android versions.
“Create My Widget” Powered by Gemini
RemoteCompose also powers a new Gemini-based feature called “Create My Widget.” This allows users to:
- Generate custom widgets using natural language
- Create adaptive home screen layouts
- Build glanceable Wear OS widgets automatically
New adaptive Android development tools
Google also announced several developer-focused improvements aimed at adaptive Android experiences across multiple device types.
Jetpack Navigation 3
Updates include:
- Scene decorators for shared UI components
- Shared element transitions
- Improved navigation animations
Jetpack Compose 1.11
Experimental features include:
- Grid layouts
- Flexbox layouts
- MediaQuery support
- Style customization tools
Google says these additions are intended to simplify adaptive UI development across phones, tablets, foldables, desktops, cars, and XR devices.
Android Auto & Android XR Improvements
Google also revealed updates for Android Auto and Android XR.
Android Auto Updates
The Car App Library is being expanded to support:
- Richer media experiences
- Simplified Android Auto development
- Unified development for Android Automotive OS
Google also confirmed full-screen video playback support for parked vehicles.
Android XR Updates
The Android XR SDK is gaining broader hardware support, including upcoming XR glasses such as:
- XREAL Project Aura
Google says adaptive Android apps can automatically appear inside immersive XR environments without additional optimization.
New XR tools include:
- Jetpack Compose Glimmer
- Jetpack Projected APIs
- Display-glanceable interfaces
- Phone-to-XR experience bridging
Developer Preview 4 of the Android XR SDK, arriving next week, introduces:
- Title Chips
- Touchpad-optimized Button Groups
- ProjectedTestRule API for automated testing
Availability
Google says Gemini Intelligence features will begin rolling out this summer on supported Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones. Support for additional device categories, including Watches, Cars, XR glasses, and Laptops, is expected later this year.
