Google has expanded Gemini’s capabilities in Google Docs by introducing AI-powered comment workflows. The new features enable Gemini to read, summarise and manage comments across documents, helping users quickly understand reviewer feedback and respond more efficiently.

The update is rolling out starting today and is available to eligible Google Workspace and Google AI subscribers.

Gemini Features, Google Docs

Gemini Can Summarise Comments & Identify Action Items

With the latest update, users can ask Gemini to analyse comments throughout a document and provide useful summaries.

Gemini can:

  • Summarise long comment threads
  • Highlight key discussion points
  • Identify unresolved comments
  • Extract important themes from reviewer feedback

This allows users to quickly understand collaboration history without manually reading every comment.

AI-Generated Replies & Comments

Google has also enabled Gemini to help users respond to comments.

Users can ask Gemini to:

  • Draft replies to existing comment threads
  • Insert comments on their behalf
  • Suggest document updates based on reviewer feedback

When Gemini recommends changes to the document, users can review, approve or reject the suggested edits before they are applied.

Easy Access From Gemini Side Panel

The new comment workflows can be accessed through:

  • The Gemini side panel in Google Docs
  • The prompt box located at the bottom of the document

Google is also introducing proactive AI suggestions that can automatically recommend:

  • Summarising comments when opening a document
  • Drafting replies when selecting an existing comment thread

Rolling Out To Eligible Users

Gemini-powered comment workflows are currently available to users who have edit access to Google Docs.

Google says the rollout has started and may take up to 15 days to reach all eligible users.

The feature is available for:
