Add MobiGyaan as a preferred source on GoogleGoogle is testing a new fashion and lifestyle discovery experience within its Google Pay app in India. The feature brings AI-powered product recommendations, visual search, and virtual try-on capabilities directly into the payment platform, allowing users to explore clothing and lifestyle products without switching to a separate shopping app.

The pilot is currently available to a limited group of users through a new ‘Discover’ tab located at the bottom of the Google Pay app.

Google Pay Fashion And Lifestyle Pilot India

AI-Powered Shopping Discovery & Virtual Try-On

The new experience is powered by Google’s Shopping Graph, which indexes more than 60 billion products, alongside Google AI and visual search technologies.

It offers several features designed to make product discovery and shopping inspiration easier:

Personalized Product Feeds: Google Pay displays curated recommendations featuring apparel, lifestyle products, and related YouTube Shorts. These recommendations are tailored to users’ preferences and eligible Google activity.

AI Virtual Try-On: Users can preview how selected clothing items might look on them by uploading a personal photograph. The AI-powered tool generates a virtual preview showing how garments could appear when worn. Google also plans to introduce automated daily outfit recommendations in future updates.

Visual Search: An integrated camera feature allows users to take pictures of clothing or upload existing images from their gallery to find visually similar products available online.

Shopping Through Merchant Websites: Although product discovery takes place within Google Pay, purchases are not completed directly through the app. Selecting a product redirects users to the respective merchant’s website, where they can complete the purchase using any payment method supported by the retailer.

Account Requirements & Personalization Controls

The new Discover experience is currently being tested with selected users. To access it, participants need the latest version of Google Pay, a personal Google Account, and enabled ‘Web & App Activity’ and ‘Search Personalization’ settings.

Google is also providing several controls to manage recommendations and shopping preferences.

  • Feed Customization: Users can react to recommended products using emoji prompts to indicate whether they want to see more or fewer similar items. These interactions can be reviewed or reversed through the ‘Your activity’ section in settings.
  • Shopping Preferences: Users can manage styling preferences, including gender settings and uploaded photographs used for virtual try-on previews, through ‘Your shopping settings’.
  • Saved Items: Products and AI-generated virtual try-on looks can be bookmarked and accessed later through the ‘Saved Items’ section.
  • Content Reporting: Users can report inappropriate product listings directly through the available reporting tools. Video content can also be reported through YouTube.

Google Pay Expands Beyond Digital Payments

The new feature represents Google’s effort to expand Google Pay beyond its traditional role as a digital payments application.

India’s digital payments and online shopping markets are highly competitive, making user engagement and retention important for technology platforms. By integrating product discovery, AI styling tools, and visual search into Google Pay, the company is exploring another way to connect consumers with online retailers.

The pilot could also provide merchants with an additional discovery channel, while giving Google Pay users access to shopping recommendations and styling inspiration within an app they already use for everyday transactions.

For now, the fashion and lifestyle discovery experience remains limited to a selected group of users, and Google has not announced a wider rollout timeline.
