Instagram’s new AI-generated Profile Label could affect the reach of AI Accounts

Instagram Warns AI Profiles: Unlabeled Accounts May Lose Recommendation Reach

Add MobiGyaan as a preferred source on GoogleInstagram is renaming its existing AI creator label to AI-generated profile and introducing reach restrictions for profiles that feature an AI-generated person but do not appropriately disclose it. The update follows Instagram’s testing of the AI creator label earlier this year and is aimed at accounts that appear to feature a human despite the person being AI-generated.

Instagram AI Generated Profile Label

Instagram Introduces AI-Generated Profile Label

Creators who previously added the AI creator label will now see the new AI-generated profile name. They can review the label and either confirm that it still applies or remove it if their profile no longer meets the criteria.

The label is intended specifically for accounts that regularly feature an AI-generated person instead of a real human. Creators who only use AI tools as part of their creative process do not need to add the AI-generated profile label.

Creators with an unlabeled profile featuring an AI-generated person can enable the label by editing their profile and turning on AI-generated profile. The label applies to the entire account rather than an individual post.

Instagram also distinguishes this from its existing AI content label, which can appear on individual posts when AI tools have been used to create or modify the content.

Where AI-Generated Profile Label Appears

Once enabled, the AI-generated profile label can appear in several places across Instagram, including:

  • On the account’s profile page or next to the profile in search
  • Next to the account’s content in Feed, Reels, and Stories
  • Next to comments or messages from the profile

The label will be shown alongside content when the specific media does not already have a label indicating that it was created or edited using AI.

Instagram May Limit Reach Of Unlabeled AI Profiles

Instagram says creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label will not see a change to their account’s reach.

However, accounts that Instagram identifies as AI-generated profiles and that do not appropriately label themselves may have their reach limited. Instagram will notify accounts it detects as unlabeled AI-generated profiles.

Creators can use Account Status to check whether their account is still eligible to appear in recommendations. If an unlabeled account becomes non-recommendable, creators have two options:

  1. Add the AI-generated profile label to accurately disclose the account’s AI-generated identity.
  2. Appeal the decision if they believe Instagram incorrectly identified their account.

Instagram also acknowledges that its detection systems may not always be accurate. If an appeal is successful, the account and its content will become eligible to appear in recommendations again.
