Meta Expands Football Experiences Across Its Apps

Meta says football fans increasingly turn to social platforms for real-time discussion and community engagement during major sporting events. The latest updates aim to make Meta’s apps a central destination for match conversations, creator content, and interactive fan experiences throughout the tournament.

Threads Gets Live Chats, Live Scores, & Football Communities

Threads is receiving several football-focused features designed around real-time conversations.

One of the biggest additions is Live Chats, where football commentators, athletes, and creators can host live discussions before, during, and after matches. Fans can react, reply, and interact directly with hosts while games are taking place.

Former football stars Sergio Agüero and Ian Wright are among the first hosts participating in the initiative.

Meta is also launching a dedicated Football Community on Threads, creating a centralized destination for match-day discussions, player content, fan reactions, and post-match debate.

Additional Threads features include:

  • Real-time Live Scores integrated into posts and Live Chats
  • Team Flair badges displaying national flags next to usernames
  • Football-themed sticker packs
  • Custom football and trophy emoji reactions
  • Aggregated media highlights from broadcasters
  • Match reminders and conversation discovery tools

  • Top Reels
  • Stories

Instagram is also introducing a new “Goal!” AI-powered voice effect within Direct Messages. Sending the effect triggers a special football-themed animation.

Facebook users will gain access to a new Football Mode designed specifically for the tournament.

The mode can be activated by double-tapping the Facebook logo at the top of the Feed and unlocks football-themed reactions, interactive surprises, and access to a football mini-game.

Another notable addition is Wear It, an AI-powered feature that allows users to virtually try on national team jerseys using AI image editing technology.

Users can:

  • Select a photo
  • Open AI Edit
  • Choose Wear It
  • Pick a national team jersey
  • Share the result via Stories, posts, or profile pictures

Facebook is also introducing tournament-themed stickers, creative editing tools, and football-inspired sharing experiences.

Messenger Brings Live Match Updates to Group Chats

Messenger is introducing real-time football experiences directly into group conversations.

The new Live Updates feature delivers instant notifications for:

  • Goals
  • Red cards

WhatsApp Adds Match Ball Reactions and Football Directory

WhatsApp is receiving several football-themed additions designed for fans following the tournament.

In collaboration with Adidas, WhatsApp has upgraded the football emoji to display the official Trionda match ball throughout the tournament.

Additional WhatsApp features include:

As the place where football conversation lives and grows, Meta’s suite of apps will enable billions of fans across the globe to connect and experience the highs and lows of the beautiful game together.”
