Part of Nikon’s S-Line, it is described as the world’s first interchangeable zoom lens to combine a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter.

The lens covers a 120-300mm focal length range, extending to 168-420mm with the built-in teleconverter. It weighs approximately 2,735 grams, making it around 515 grams lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR released in 2020.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S Features

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is designed for demanding photography scenarios, including wildlife, sports, and other fast-moving subjects. Its focal length range is suited to capturing birds in flight, animals in dense forests, and wildlife activity in low-light conditions such as dawn and dusk.

Nikon highlights the lens’ high-resolution optical performance and smooth, natural bokeh, with image rendering designed to remain comparable to that of a prime lens across the frame. The built-in teleconverter extends the focal length to 420mm while changing the maximum aperture from f/2.8 to f/4.

Autofocus & Optical Coatings

The lens uses Nikon’s Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) autofocus drive system, designed to deliver fast, precise, and smooth focusing when tracking moving subjects. This can be useful for wildlife photography, sports, action, and other situations where subjects move unpredictably.

For challenging lighting conditions, the lens combines Meso Amorphous Coat with ARNEO Coat to suppress ghosting and flare. These coatings are intended to help maintain image quality when shooting against strong light or in scenes with shaded foliage and uneven lighting. The front element also features a fluorine coating.

Vibration Reduction

The lens offers up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction at the center and edges of the frame when paired with a camera that supports Synchro VR. This helps compensate for camera shake during handheld photography, particularly when using longer focal lengths or shooting in situations where a tripod or monopod is impractical.

Design & Handling

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S features internal focusing and an internal zoom mechanism, keeping the lens’ overall length constant while focusing or zooming. Its construction uses a magnesium-alloy body with extensive sealing for dust- and drip-resistant performance.

For tripod use, the lens supports Arca-Swiss screw-type quick-release tripod clamps. Its tripod collar includes a rubber cushion and an integrated finger grip. The lens also supports front screw-on filters and rear slip-in filter holders.

Nikon NIKKOR Z Design

Speaking on the launch, Sajjan Kumar, Managing Director, Nikon India Pvt. Ltd., said, “At Nikon India, we continuously strive to equip creators with cutting-edge imaging solutions that help them realise their creative vision. The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S combines exceptional optical performance, extended reach, and unmatched versatility, making it an ideal companion for wildlife photographers seeking to capture distant and unpredictable subjects.”
