Part of Nikon’s S-Line, it is described as the world’s first interchangeable zoom lens to combine a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter.

The lens covers a 120-300mm focal length range, extending to 168-420mm with the built-in teleconverter. It weighs approximately 2,735 grams, making it around 515 grams lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR released in 2020.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S: World’s First Interchangeable Zoom Lens

Designed primarily for professional wildlife photography, the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is intended for capturing fast-moving subjects across different environments. Its focal length range is suited to photographing birds in flight, rapidly moving animals, elusive wildlife in dense forests, and subjects active during low-light periods at dawn and dusk. It is also designed for long-range photography where capturing fine details from a distance is important.

The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and optical design are intended to deliver high resolution and smooth, natural bokeh. Nikon also highlights rendering performance comparable to that of a prime lens across the frame, while retaining the flexibility of a zoom lens.

The built-in 1.4x teleconverter extends the maximum focal length to 420mm without requiring you to change lenses. With the teleconverter engaged, the maximum aperture changes from f/2.8 to f/4. Despite incorporating this mechanism, the lens weighs approximately 2,735 grams, offering a lighter design than its predecessor.

Autofocus | Optical Coatings | Vibration Reduction

The lens uses Nikon’s Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) autofocus drive system, designed to deliver fast, precise, and smooth focusing when tracking moving subjects. It is intended for situations involving unpredictable movement, including wildlife photography, birds in flight, sports, vehicles, and performances.

For improved image quality in challenging lighting conditions, the lens combines Nikon’s Meso Amorphous Coat with ARNEO Coat. These coatings are designed to reduce ghosting and flare when shooting against strong light, photographing subjects emerging from shaded foliage, or working in low-light environments. Nikon describes Meso Amorphouzs Coat as offering the highest anti-reflection performance in its history. The front element also features a fluorine coating.

For handheld photography, the lens offers up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction at the center and edges of the frame when paired with a camera that supports Synchro VR. This can help reduce camera shake when shooting at longer focal lengths and provide greater flexibility when using a tripod or monopod is impractical.

Design & Handling

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S features internal focusing and an internal zoom mechanism, keeping the lens’ overall length constant during focusing and zooming. Its magnesium-alloy construction and extensive sealing are designed to provide dust- and drip-resistant performance for outdoor shooting environments.

For tripod use, the lens supports Arca-Swiss screw-type quick-release tripod clamps. The tripod collar features a rubber cushion and an integrated finger grip for handling and portability. The lens also accommodates front screw-on filters and rear slip-in filter holders.

Nikon includes the HB-120 Bayonet Hood, designed for convenient attachment, removal, and storage. These handling features are intended to make the lens more practical for demanding shooting situations, particularly when working outdoors or tracking subjects over extended periods.
