Add MobiGyaan as a preferred source on GoogleOpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model designed to combine visual reasoning, computer use, and natural writing for professional workflows. Compared with GPT-5.6 Terra, the new model delivers improvements in software engineering, factual accuracy, and task completion speed, while reducing API costs.

GPT-6.1 Terra is designed for tasks such as drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms, editing videos, and automating repetitive work across desktop applications. OpenAI says the model can handle more tasks within the same usage allowance in ChatGPT Work and Codex compared with GPT-5.6 Terra.

Faster Computer Use & Visual Reasoning

OpenAI evaluated GPT-6.1 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam, a benchmark covering professional tasks such as converting architectural drawings into 3D models and reviewing animated films shot by shot to produce time-coded logs for restoration teams.

At medium reasoning effort, GPT-6.1 Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at approximately one-third of the cost. OpenAI also reported performance on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth of the price per token.

At maximum reasoning effort, OpenAI reported more than three times the token efficiency of Claude Opus 5.5, a price per token that was one-fourth as high, and an approximately ninefold reduction in cost per task. The model also completed tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

On MMMU-Pro, a visual reasoning benchmark, GPT-6.1 Terra outperformed GPT-5.6 Terra at every reasoning setting and nearly matched GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol at a substantially lower cost.

The model was also evaluated on OSWorld 2.1, which measures how effectively AI agents operate desktop applications to complete multistep tasks. At medium reasoning effort, GPT-6.1 Terra surpassed the best score previously achieved by GPT-5.6 Terra at a fraction of the cost per task.

Improved Factual Accuracy & Software Engineering

OpenAI says it has focused on reducing hallucinations and factual errors in GPT-6.1 Terra. On its internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the model recorded an error rate of 16.7% at low reasoning effort, compared with 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra. At maximum reasoning effort, its error rate fell to 4.3%, nearly matching the rates recorded by GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

The model also demonstrated improvements on Terminal-Bench 4.0, which evaluates coding agents on command-line tasks, including fixing web pages whose layouts shift as they load. At maximum reasoning effort, GPT-6.1 Terra solved 50.3% of tasks, compared with the published score of 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.

OpenAI notes that GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain better choices for the most complex coding tasks.

On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, which evaluates the use of code for scientific research, GPT-6.1 Terra surpassed GPT-6.1 Sol at a lower cost. It also came within five percentage points of Claude Opus 5.5 while costing less than one-fifth as much, according to OpenAI’s estimates.

Safety & Alignment Improvements

GPT-6.1 Terra meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework and retains the safeguards developed for GPT-6 Astra. It also incorporates alignment improvements from the GPT-6 series.

According to OpenAI’s evaluations, GPT-6.1 Terra is more likely than GPT-5.6 Terra to remain within the scope of a task and clearly disclose limitations or potential blockers. The model also demonstrated resistance to prompt-injection attempts involving malicious instructions designed to divert it from the user’s original task.

GPT-6.1 Terra Pricing & Availability

OpenAI says the lower API pricing makes GPT-6.1 Terra suitable for high-volume automation, including processing incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, the same usage allowance covers more tasks with GPT-6.1 Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.

The model is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users starting 27th October 2026. Developers can also access it through the OpenAI API using the model identifier gpt-6.1-terra.

GPT-6.1 Terra API Pricing

OpenAI’s standard API pricing for GPT-6.1 Terra is as follows:

  • Input Tokens: US$1 per million tokens
  • Cached Input Tokens: US$0.05 per million tokens
  • Output Tokens: US$5 per million tokens

These rates are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, according to OpenAI.
