OpenAI has announced a major update for ChatGPT, introducing improvements to the GPT-5.6 Sol model while expanding GPT-5.6 Luna access for Free and Go users. The update focuses on improving factual accuracy, response quality, reasoning controls, and safety across the ChatGPT experience. Plus and Pro users gain a new reasoning slider for controlling how much the model thinks before responding, while Free and Go users will soon receive unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna text chats along with a new Think button for more complex questions.
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol has been refined specifically for everyday ChatGPT conversations, including web searches, planning, research, writing, coding, decision-making, and general assistance. The updated model is designed to provide more direct answers with cleaner formatting, automatically adjusting response length depending on the complexity of the request. Simple questions receive concise answers, while more demanding tasks receive detailed responses that keep the primary recommendation clear and easy to follow.
Another key improvement is factual accuracy. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol is now better at handling dates, numbers, rules, citations, and assumptions, while also making better use of information gathered from web sources. Rather than agreeing with incorrect assumptions, the model is designed to identify and correct them when necessary.
OpenAI says internal evaluations across financial, medical, and legal prompts showed a significant reduction in factual mistakes. Responses containing at least one factual error were approximately 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol and 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant.
A major addition for Plus and Pro subscribers is the new Reasoning Slider, allowing users to control how much reasoning GPT-5.6 Sol applies before generating a response. Lower reasoning levels are intended for quick everyday questions, while higher reasoning settings are designed for research, planning, writing, coding, and other complex tasks. The feature is available across ChatGPT on the web, desktop, and mobile apps.
OpenAI is also expanding GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go users. The company says GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default ChatGPT model for these users later this week. Beginning next week, users will also gain unlimited text conversations together with a new Think button, allowing the model additional reasoning time for more challenging questions. Usage remains protected by abuse safeguards, while limits on image generation, file uploads, and other advanced tools continue to apply.
The update also introduces additional safety improvements, particularly for younger users. OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna have received additional training designed to avoid romantic roleplay with minors, discourage age-restricted challenges, and avoid presenting AI as a replacement for real-world relationships.
The models now apply stronger safeguards around sexual content, eating disorders, body-image risks, dangerous activities, age-restricted products, and graphic violence. In situations where younger users may require help, ChatGPT is also designed to encourage them to seek support from trusted people. According to OpenAI, these protections are backed by additional system-level safeguards and expanded safety evaluations.
OpenAI notes that the updated GPT-5.6 Sol experience is optimized specifically for ChatGPT conversations. The GPT-5.6 Sol models available through Work and Codex remain unchanged as part of this rollout.
