Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a partnership with Meta to deploy Silent Mobile Verification (SMV) across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, enabling password-less and OTP-free authentication experiences for Vi subscribers. The collaboration marks another step toward network-based digital identity verification, allowing users to authenticate themselves directly through Vi’s telecom infrastructure without manually entering credentials or waiting for One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

According to Vi, Silent Mobile Verification works by securely validating a user’s mobile identity in the background through the telecom network. When subscribers access supported workflows on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram while connected to the Vi mobile network, authentication requests are verified directly through the network infrastructure, creating a faster and more seamless user experience.

The company says the technology eliminates several traditional authentication steps, reducing friction during account access while enhancing security against phishing attacks and identity-related fraud.

Vi subscribers will encounter SMV-enabled authentication during multiple customer journeys across Meta platforms, including:

  • New account registrations
  • Mobile number verification
  • Account login and re-login
  • Account recovery processes
  • Security verification checks

By removing the need to manually enter OTPs or switch between applications, Vi says the solution can significantly reduce authentication time while improving overall user convenience.

The deployment comes at a time when both government initiatives and private sector organizations in India are increasingly focusing on secure digital identity frameworks and fraud prevention mechanisms. Network-based authentication technologies such as SMV are gaining attention as an alternative to traditional SMS-based verification systems, which can be vulnerable to phishing attempts, SIM-swap attacks, and user experience challenges.

Vi noted that the partnership represents an important evolution in the use of telecom network APIs and digital trust services. By exposing secure authentication capabilities through network infrastructure, telecom operators can enable digital platforms to verify users more efficiently while maintaining privacy and security standards.

Looking ahead, Vodafone Idea plans to expand its network-based authentication ecosystem by working with developers, application providers, and enterprise partners. The company says it intends to introduce Silent Mobile Verification and additional trust-based network services across more third-party applications in the future.

These future deployments are expected to focus on secure authentication, fraud prevention, risk-based verification systems, and digital trust services, helping businesses improve user onboarding and account security while reducing dependence on traditional password and OTP-based workflows.

Commenting on the launch, Abhijit Kishore, CEO, Vodafone Idea Limited, said, “Telecom networks are increasingly playing an important role in enabling safer digital experiences. With millions of consumers relying on Vi’s secure telecom network every day, we can build these experiences on a scale. Through our partnership with Meta, we are enabling SMV capabilities that enhance cyber safety and reduce fraud risks, while creating seamless authentication experiences for users across some of the country’s most widely used digital platforms.”

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta in India, said, “Bringing Network-based authentication is a critical step forward in making verification simpler, seamless and more secure for users across our platforms. We’re pleased to work with Vi to bring this capability to their subscribers using WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram.”
