YouTube expands Picture-in-Picture feature globally

Add MobiGyaan as a preferred source on GoogleYouTube has begun rolling out its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature to a wider global audience, enabling users to watch videos in a floating window while using other apps. The update expands access beyond premium users, bringing multitasking video playback to free users in more regions.

What is Picture-in-Picture (PiP)?

Picture-in-Picture allows videos to continue playing in a small, movable window after exiting the app.

Key Features:

  • Floating video window after leaving the app
  • Window can be moved and resized
  • Quick access to play/pause controls
  • Tap to return to full-screen app
  • Works seamlessly while using other apps
  • Activates automatically (if enabled)

This feature enhances multitasking without interrupting playback.

YouTube is now extending PiP access globally:

For Free Users:

  • Outside the US: PiP available for long-form, non-music content; Supported on Android and iOS
  • Inside the US: No change (existing PiP access continues)

For Premium Users:

  • PiP available for both music and non-music content
  • Background playback continues even after closing PiP

For Premium Lite:

  • PiP available for non-music content

Device Requirements: Available on Android and iOS devices; iPhone and iPad require iOS 15 or later.

Content Limitations

For non-Premium users, PiP does not support music content, including:

  • Official music videos
  • Art Tracks
  • Children’s songs
  • User-generated music content

Music playback in PiP remains a Premium-only feature.
