London-based consumer technology brand Nothing has announced the rollout of Essential Voice, a new software feature designed to enhance speech-to-text functionality on its smartphones. The feature is part of the company’s broader Essential AI toolset and reflects its push toward a more voice-first user experience.

Essential Voice aims to address a long-standing gap between typing and speaking on smartphones. While users typically type at around 36 words per minute, spoken input can reach speeds of approximately 150 words per minute. However, existing solutions such as voice notes and traditional dictation tools come with limitations. Voice notes are often inconvenient to revisit or scan, while standard dictation frequently produces unstructured text filled with pauses, filler words, and inconsistent formatting.
The new feature processes spoken input in real time to generate clean, structured text. It removes filler words such as “um” and “uh”, refines sentence construction, and supports voice-based formatting commands. Users can dictate instructions to automatically organize content into lists, steps, or bullet points, allowing for more usable output directly from speech.
Essential Voice is integrated into the system keyboard and can also be activated via a long-press of the Essential Key, enabling users to dictate text without switching between applications. The feature also introduces personal voice mappings, allowing users to assign custom outputs to specific phrases. For instance, predefined phrases can trigger consistent formatting, capitalization, or insertion of templates and links.
The software supports more than 100 languages with automatic language detection, including regional variants. It also functions as a real-time translation tool, enabling users to speak in one language while generating text in another.
On the privacy front, Nothing states that Essential Voice does not listen passively in the background and only activates upon user initiation. Audio input is encrypted and processed on the company’s servers, after which it is deleted, with only the resulting text returned to the device.

Essential Voice is currently available on the Nothing Phone (3) and is scheduled to roll out to the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro later this month, followed by the Phone (4a) in early May 2026.
