OnePlus may reportedly skip the launch of its upcoming OnePlus 16 in India, according to a new rumor shared by a tipster on X. Instead, the OnePlus 16R is tipped to become the brand’s next flagship smartphone in the Indian market, followed by new devices in the Nord and N series lineup.
OnePlus has traditionally launched both a flagship number-series smartphone and an R-series model. The R-series devices generally use a less powerful SoC comparatively and offer fewer cameras while focusing on features such as a larger battery.
OnePlus 16 May Skip India
If the latest rumor turns out to be accurate, Indian consumers could miss out on the OnePlus 16 and its expected Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 SoC. The OnePlus 16R would instead reportedly serve as the company’s next high-end offering in the country.
The OnePlus 16R is expected to use either the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or potentially the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 6, although the specifications of the phone have not been confirmed.
Possible Shift in OnePlus’ Global Strategy
The rumored decision would follow OnePlus’ recent move to exit the European and North American markets completely. This could indicate a broader strategy of focusing more heavily on the Chinese market at the high end, although the company’s plans for India remain unclear.
There have also been previous rumors suggesting that OnePlus could eventually exit the Indian market, but there has been no official confirmation of such a move.
For now, the OnePlus 16’s India availability remains unconfirmed, and the possibility of the OnePlus 16R becoming the next flagship in the country should be treated as a rumor until OnePlus makes an official announcement.
