Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Meta Platforms have announced a strategic partnership to develop a new hyperscale data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility will be Meta’s first built-to-suit data center project in India and will feature an initial capacity of 168 MW, making it one of the largest AI and cloud infrastructure deployments in the country. The project is expected to be delivered within two years, with provisions for future expansion as demand grows.

Meta x Reliance

Under the agreement, Meta will lease the entire initial 168 MW capacity to support its global infrastructure operations, core business services, and rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) computing requirements. The development further strengthens the long-standing relationship between Reliance and Meta, following Meta’s $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020 and subsequent collaborations in digital services and AI initiatives.

The new facility will be developed in Jamnagar, Gujarat, a location selected for its strategic advantages, including access to reliable water resources, strong infrastructure capabilities, proximity to India’s western submarine cable landing stations, and direct integration with Reliance Jio’s extensive fiber network.

Reliance will serve as a complete end-to-end infrastructure partner for the project, handling the entire lifecycle of the facility, including design, construction, utility management, connectivity, renewable energy integration, and ongoing operations.

A major focus of the project is sustainability. The data center will operate entirely on renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater-based cooling systems. Meta will fully fund the energy and water consumption associated with the facility, supporting both companies’ environmental and sustainability commitments.

The hyperscale data center will also integrate with Meta’s global connectivity infrastructure, including Project Waterworth, Meta’s next-generation subsea cable initiative designed to provide high-speed and low-latency connectivity across global regions.

Alongside the data center announcement, Meta revealed that it has contracted nearly 1 GW of new renewable energy capacity in India to support its growing digital infrastructure and AI workloads. These investments include large-scale solar and wind energy projects across multiple states.

The announcement comes as India continues to position itself as a major destination for AI infrastructure, cloud computing, and digital services investments, supported by government initiatives that classify data centers as strategic national infrastructure.

Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited, said, “This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation – not just for India, but for the world. Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing, and we are proud to partner with Meta to make this vision a reality.”
