Zoho Corporation has announced the launch of Nathu La, the company’s first indigenously designed server platform developed as part of its long-term strategy to build a fully integrated technology stack spanning hardware, infrastructure, and software. Developed in collaboration with Intel and powered by Intel Xeon 6 processors, the new platform is designed to improve efficiency, reduce infrastructure costs, and strengthen India’s domestic computing ecosystem.

The Nathu La server platform represents more than five years of research and development covering hardware design, firmware engineering, systems management, thermal optimization, and infrastructure architecture. According to Zoho, the new platform delivers performance comparable to its existing infrastructure while reducing power consumption by 12% to 18% and lowering total cost of ownership (TCO) by 20% to 30%.

One of the key highlights of Nathu La is its Open Compute Project (OCP)-based architecture. The platform is designed with modularity, thermal efficiency, and serviceability in mind, allowing organizations to deploy and maintain infrastructure more efficiently across different environments.

At the core of the system are Intel Xeon 6 processors optimized for virtualization, high-performance computing (HPC), storage workloads, and AI inference applications. Zoho says the platform also incorporates custom-designed subsystems, including proprietary power delivery systems, custom network interface cards (NICs), and an in-house Data Centre Secure Control Module (DC-SCM).

The company has filed more than five patents related to the server’s thermal management technologies and cost-optimized infrastructure architecture. Zoho notes that all modular components were designed by its internal hardware engineering teams and assembled with the support of domestic Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) partners.

Beyond hardware development, Nathu La forms part of Zoho’s broader vision of full-stack technology ownership. The company plans to gradually migrate its global application hosting infrastructure onto the new server platform, enabling tighter hardware-software integration, improved workload optimization, and lower operational costs, particularly for AI-driven services where inference costs continue to rise.

The launch also reflects growing efforts toward technological self-reliance. Zoho highlights that the platform’s intellectual property is entirely owned within India, eliminating dependency on foreign licensing, firmware update frameworks, and third-party hardware ecosystems. The server platform incorporates hardware-rooted security mechanisms and is designed to support long-term infrastructure independence.

The Nathu La platform aligns with several national initiatives including Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the National Supercomputing Mission. Zoho says the platform also complies with India’s Open Source Software (OSS) policy and meets local content requirements that may support government procurement opportunities.

Development of the server platform was led from Zoho’s Nagpur facility, where the company established a dedicated server R&D team in 2020. Much of the engineering talent behind the project was developed through Zoho’s SETU (Student’s Engagement for Transformative Upskilling) initiative, which focuses on advanced Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) skills.

The SETU program targets engineering students across Central India and emphasizes hands-on hardware development, first-principles engineering, and deep technical problem-solving. Zoho says the initiative has already trained more than 300 students, with several graduates joining the company’s hardware and infrastructure research teams.

With Nathu La, Zoho is taking a significant step beyond software into infrastructure engineering, positioning itself as one of the few Indian technology companies actively developing and owning critical server technologies designed to power cloud services, enterprise applications, and future AI workloads.

Shailesh Davey, CEO, Zoho Corp, said, “We are proud to build a server system that is truly designed in India and taking a step towards creating sovereign technology. The development of the Nathu La server reflects our commitment to creating complex technology powered by talent from smaller towns and villages. Through focused investments in R&D and skill development, this foray into hardware enables us not only to build and own the technology, but also to cultivate the expertise and talent behind it.

“With AI advancements, inference costs are rising rapidly. With our strategy of using contextual, right-sized models, running on our own platform, on our own servers, in our own data centres, we are compounding the benefits accrued from owning and operating our entire technology stack. This ensures that our solutions are more sustainable and accessible for businesses. These long-term R&D investments we are making at every layer of the stack are aimed at delivering customer value.”
