OnePlus recently announced a major restructuring of its global operations, confirming that it will conclude new product rollouts in Europe and North America. Alongside the hardware market exit, the company has also revealed a significant change to its global software strategy, with eligible existing OnePlus devices set to receive the option to voluntarily migrate from OxygenOS to ColorOS following the release of ColorOS 17.

OnePlus has not yet announced an official list of smartphones and tablets eligible for the transition. However, a tipster named Yogesh Brar has shared a tentative list of supported OnePlus phones, while the company’s existing software update commitments indicate that several additional smartphones and tablets could also qualify.

Importantly, the move to ColorOS 17 will not be mandatory. Eligible users will have the choice to switch to ColorOS, while additional information shared by the company indicates that users who migrate will also have the option to roll back to OxygenOS.

OnePlus Optional ColorOS 17 Upgrade Global

OnePlus Moves Towards Shared ColorOS Software Architecture

According to OnePlus’s official statement, the ColorOS transition is part of an operational adjustment to its software strategy. Following the official release of ColorOS 17, existing OnePlus devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope will be given the option to voluntarily update to the new operating system.

OnePlus says adopting a shared software architecture with parent company OPPO will allow it to streamline software development, accelerate update delivery, improve overall software quality, and make better use of shared engineering and R&D resources.

The company has not confirmed that OxygenOS will immediately disappear from existing devices. Since the ColorOS 17 migration is voluntary, eligible users will be able to decide whether they want to make the transition.

More OnePlus Phones and Tablets Could Be Eligible

Based on their existing software update support periods, several additional OnePlus devices could also qualify for the ColorOS 17 upgrade even though they were not included in the leaked list. These potentially eligible devices include:

  • OnePlus N6
  • OnePlus Pad 4
  • OnePlus Pad 3
  • OnePlus Pad 2
  • OnePlus Pad Lite
  • OnePlus Pad Go 2

The final eligibility will depend on the upgrade scope defined by OnePlus. The company has yet to reveal the complete device list, rollout timeline, or regional availability for the ColorOS 17 transition.

ColorOS 17 Upgrade Will Be Voluntary

One of the most important details of the transition is that OnePlus will not force eligible users to move immediately from OxygenOS to ColorOS.

Users with supported devices will be able to choose whether they want to install ColorOS 17 or remain on their existing software. OnePlus has also indicated that users who migrate to ColorOS will retain the ability to roll back to OxygenOS, although the company is expected to provide more information regarding supported rollback versions later.

Older OnePlus devices that fall outside the ColorOS 17 upgrade scope will continue receiving standard version maintenance support according to their existing software commitments.

Existing OnePlus Devices Will Continue Receiving Updates

The software strategy change comes alongside OnePlus’s decision to end new product rollouts in Europe and North America. However, the company has reassured existing users that devices already sold in these regions will continue receiving scheduled software updates and security patches for the support periods originally promised for each model.

OnePlus will also continue operating its customer service and repair channels in accordance with existing warranty obligations. Statutory consumer rights in European countries, the United States, and Canada will remain unaffected by the restructuring.

OnePlus Continues to Expand in India

While OnePlus is withdrawing new hardware launches from Europe and North America, the company has reaffirmed that India remains one of its most important global markets.

OnePlus plans to continue expanding its portfolio in the country, with the OnePlus N6x among the upcoming smartphones expected to join its India lineup. The company has also integrated its after-sales operations with OPPO’s service infrastructure, giving OnePlus users access to more than 600 service centres across India.

Existing product support, warranty coverage, and servicing will continue for OnePlus customers in the country.

ColorOS 17 Rollout Details Awaited

For now, OnePlus has officially confirmed only that eligible existing devices globally will have the option to voluntarily upgrade to ColorOS 17 after its release. The company has not yet announced a confirmed list of supported devices or a detailed rollout schedule.

The leaked eligibility list and OnePlus’s existing update policies provide an early indication of which smartphones and tablets could make the transition. However, users will have to wait for an official announcement from OnePlus for the final eligibility list, rollout timeline, migration process, and detailed OxygenOS rollback options.
